But no matter what sort of sanitisation you use, it’s crucial to ensure the water is balanced correctly when it’s being used by yourself and your loved ones.

We do this with only the chemicals that are essential in natures natural form of water balance. Using pool cleaning chemicals such as chlorine, bromine, cyanuric acid is not required with the Freshwater Pool System. Using only pH increasers and decreasers, alkalinity adjusters and calcium, we can maintain the ideal balance of the water. A NKD-R Freshwater Pool System requires much less addition of such chemicals than other pools such as chlorine, salt water or mineral pools. Fewer chemicals in your pool mean less maintenance, less expensive chemical products and a cleaner, more inviting swimming experience.

Pool cleaning chemicals are necessary

You’ve probably swum in an unbalanced pool before and noticed a pungent smell, oily feel or murky look. Pools require chemical sanitisation to avoid this. The only pool that actually consists of zero chemicals such as chlorine is a natural pool or pond. Any other swimming pool needs some form of cleaning chemical to prevent it from turning murky and green, making it unsafe for swimming in.

It’s not just the colour of the water that’s of concern; chemicals are used to disinfect your pool water, keeping it free from harmful bacteria. In addition to this, pool cleaning chemicals are used to maintain the balance of pH, ensuring a healthy swimming experience for you and your family.

If you’re building a pool, remember that keeping the balance right is a regular task all year. With a Freshwater Pool System, the upkeep is far less than other pool types. There are up to 50% fewer chemicals going into the pool making water balance much simpler and stable. One chemical that’s not even necessary in a Naked Pool is the stabiliser (cyanuric acid). The minerals left in the water of a Naked Pool form a residual that continues to sanitise the water and is not affected by UV or heat like traditional sanitisers.

The various chemicals used aim to maintain these levels:

  • pH – between 7.2 and 7.6
  • Total Alkalinity – between 80ppm and 120ppm (parts per million)
  • Calcium Hardness – between 150ppm and 300ppm

What chemicals are used in a NKD-R Freshwater Pool?

The only chemicals required in our pools are those used by nature to naturally balance water. Water in nature requires a certain amount of balance which it finds through soils, plant life and other matter. These include calcium, alkalinity and pH. Keeping these in range ensures that the sanitiser disinfecting the water is at its most efficient and doesn’t damage pool surfaces or equipment. There is also a small amount of salt added to the pool, (up to 80% less than salt or mineral pool systems), that allows the system to effectively sanitise and destroy organic matter in the water such as dust, sunscreens, make-up, body fats and oils and more. Importantly, a freshwater pool does not require Cyanuric Acid, now banned in some parts of Europe and the USA like a traditional chlorine-based pool or salt and mineral pool system.

Handling and storage of pool cleaning chemicals

It’s crucial that pool cleaning chemicals are stored and handled with extreme care. Generally speaking, your pool cleaning chemicals should be stored in a cool, dry place off the ground but not too high up that they’re at risk of falling. When using chemicals to clean your pool, always read instructions and take care with how much you use and thoroughly clean up any spills.
