Mineral pools, sometimes called magnesium pools, blend potassium and magnesium chloride into the water on top of the usual salt. The catch is what’s underneath: mineral pools still rely on magnesium, sodium, and potassium chloride combining to produce chlorine, the same chemical process as a standard salt pool, just with extra minerals riding along at extra cost. Concentrations vary widely depending on the treatment method and water source, and some research has found magnesium levels in certain systems too low to deliver much benefit at all. The wellness claims outrun the evidence: little independent research confirms what’s advertised. Add in the cost, a large dose to fill the pool initially and regular top-ups after that, and it’s a pricier version of saltwater, not a different system.

In the US, mineral pools are close to a non-factor: few builders install them, and most homeowners have never had one recommended, so for a US pool owner, it’s rarely part of the real decision.

And it reduces the work involved, not eliminates it: you’ll spend meaningfully less time and money on chemical management than a chlorine or saltwater pool, and at a much lower effort.
